The earthquake struck at 11:56 am NST (06:11:26 UTC) at a depth of approximately 15 km (9.3 mi) (which is considered shallow and therefore more damaging than quakes that originate deeper in the ground),with its epicenter approximately 34 km (21 mi) east-southeast of Lamjung, Nepal, lasting approximately fifty seconds.Nearly 9000 people died and nearly 22000 were injured. The Magnitude recorded was 7.9 on Richter scale.According to UN more than 3,00,000 houses were damaged. Chernobyl Accident 1986
APRIL 26TH 1986
On April 26, 1986, a sudden surge of power during a reactor systems test destroyed Unit 4 of the nuclear power station at Chernobyl, Ukraine, in the former Soviet Union. The accident and the fire that followed released massive amounts of radioactive material into the environment. The event occurred during a late-night safety test which simulated a station blackout power-failure, in the course of which safety systems were intentionally turned off. A combination of inherent reactor design flaws and the reactor operators arranging the core in a manner contrary to the checklist for the test, eventually resulted in uncontrolled reaction conditions. Water flashed into steam generating a destructive steam explosion and a subsequent open-air graphite fire. Two Chernobyl plant workers died on the night of the accident, and a further 28 people died within a few weeks as a result of acute radiation poisoning.
